The Sphinx Who Loved Green
Lily's black cat, Mittens, always pounced on anything that moved—leaves, shadows, even imaginary bugs. But today, Mittens crouched low, tail twitching, staring at something behind the old oak tree.
"What is it, Mittens?" Lily whispered, creeping closer.
Peeking around the bark, she gasped. A tiny sphinx no bigger than a soup bowl sat curled on a mossy stone. His wings shimmered like soap bubbles, and his eyes held the wisdom of a thousand years.
"I am Phineas," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "And I have traveled far seeking something green and crunchy."
Lily's golden dog, Buster, bounded over, barking happily. Phineas fluffed his wings but didn't fly away.
"Spinach!" Lily remembered. "Mom planted some in the garden!"
The sphinx's eyes widened. "The magical vegetable that makes you strong?"
Leading Phineas to the garden, Lily plucked a fresh leaf. The sphinx nibbled it delicately, then did a backflip. "Magnificent! In my homeland, spinach gives creatures the power to fly higher than mountains."
"Really?" Lily's little brother Toby appeared, holding his baseball glove. "Can it help me hit a home run?"
Phineas winked. "Only if you believe. Spinach fuels dreams as much as muscles."
That afternoon, something magical happened. Mittens chased imaginary sphinxes, Buster howled at home runs, and Toby ate three whole leaves of spinach. When he stepped up to the plate—CRACK! The baseball sailed over the fence, a perfect home run.
"Was it the spinach?" Toby asked, grinning.
Phineas, now perched on Lily's shoulder, purred softly. "The spinach helped. But the real magic was believing you could do it."
As the sun set, the tiny sphinx revealed his secret. He wasn't lost at all. He was a Guardian of Gardens, sent to find children brave enough to try new things. And Mittens? She had spotted him on purpose.
"You're a good cat," Lily whispered, scratching Mittens behind the ears.
Phineas spread his shimmering wings. "Remember, little ones—magic lives in brave bites, big dreams, and friends who believe in each other."
And every time Lily ate spinach after that, she swore she could fly just a little bit higher than before.
