The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball
Lily loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon after school, she'd grab her glove and head to the backyard, throwing the ball high into the air and catching it with a satisfying *thwack*.
One sunny afternoon, something magical happened. As Lily reached for a fly ball, a tiny creature landed right beside her mitt—a miniature sphinx no bigger than a softball, with golden fur and wise amber eyes.
"Greetings, young player," the sphinx said in a voice like chimes. "I am Cleo, guardian of the Imagination Fields. I've been watching you catch balls for weeks."
Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"
"All sphinxes can talk," Cleo said proudly. "But I need your help. I've lost something very important—a magical vitamin that fell from my pouch. Without it, I can't return to my home."
Lily looked around the grass. "I'll help you find it! What does it look like?"
"It sparkles like sunshine and tastes like strawberries," Cleo explained. "But beware—it only reveals itself to those who believe in magic."
Together they searched the backyard. Lily threw her baseball in different directions, and wherever it landed, they'd hunt through the grass. Cleo told Lily stories about ancient Egypt and how sphinxes loved riddles and games almost as much as they loved guarding secrets.
"What's your favorite riddle?" Lily asked, giggling as she tossed the ball to Cleo, who caught it with surprising grace.
Cleo smiled. "What has wings but cannot fly?"
Lily thought hard. "A baseball diamond!"
"Correct!" Cleo cheered. Just then, Lily spotted something glittering near home plate. She knelt down and found a tiny glowing pill-shaped crystal—the magical vitamin!
"You found it!" Cleo danced joyfully. "Because you believed, you could see it. That's the most important lesson—magic lives where wonder lives."
Cleo swallowed the vitamin and began to glow. Before she disappeared, she left Lily with a gift: a tiny golden sphinx figurine for her baseball bag.
"Whenever you play," Cleo's voice echoed, "remember: the real magic isn't in winning—it's in playing with heart and imagination."
Now every time Lily steps up to bat, she taps her pocket, knowing her friend is cheering her on from somewhere magical. And sometimes, just sometimes, she catches balls no one else could ever reach—because she plays with wonder in her heart.
