The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball
Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he'd practice in his backyard, tossing his lucky ball up high and swinging his bat. *WHACK!* The ball would sail over the fence, into the mysterious woods behind his house.
One afternoon, Leo's favorite baseball rolled farther than ever. He chased it through brambles and ferns until he found himself in a hidden clearing. There, perched on a stone pedestal, sat the most peculiar creature Leo had ever seen. It had the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and a human face.
"I am the Sphinx," the creature said in a rumbling voice. "And I have been watching you play. That game—baseball—it looks like fun."
Leo's eyes widened. "You want to learn baseball?"
"Nobody has visited me in three hundred years," the Sphinx sighed. "I have been very lonely."
Leo's heart went out to the giant creature. "I can teach you!"
For weeks, Leo returned to the clearing every day. He showed the Sphinx how to hold a bat (gently, with one claw), how to throw a ball (not too hard, or it would go into orbit), and how to run the bases (the Sphinx had to hop carefully to avoid crushing home plate).
The Sphinx became Leo's best friend. They laughed when the Sphinx accidentally knocked a ball into the next county. They cheered when the Sphinx finally hit a perfect home run, leaping into the sky and catching it in their beak.
"Thank you, Leo," the Sphinx said one evening. "You taught me that having fun together makes friendship special. That's more important than any riddle I could ever ask."
Leo smiled. "That's what baseball is all about—playing together."
From that day on, Leo never played alone. He brought his school friends to meet the Sphinx, and they formed the most magical baseball team anyone had ever seen. And every time Leo hit a home run, the Sphinx would roar with pride, their golden wings shimmering in the sun.
Sometimes the best friends come from the most unexpected places, and sometimes the ancient and the new can play together perfectly.
