The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball
Leo tossed the baseball up and swung his bat with all his might. Whiff! The ball dropped onto the grass. Again. Being the only kid on his street who loved baseball was lonely sometimes.
That's when he noticed something strange behind the old oak tree. A shimmering cable seemed to stretch from the ground into the sky, glowing with golden light. Leo crept closer and gasped.
Perched on a mossy rock was the most magnificent creature he'd ever seen — a sphinx with brilliant orange hair that flowed like sunset flames. Her fur was golden, and her eyes sparkled with ancient wisdom.
"You swing with your shoulders, not your heart," the sphinx said in a voice like gentle chimes.
Leo's mouth fell open. "You can talk?"
"I've watched many players from many worlds through the crystal cables that connect places beyond imagination. Baseball is my favorite game. May I?" The sphinx extended a paw.
Leo tossed the ball. The sphinx didn't swing with a bat — she simply tapped it with her paw, and the ball sailed over the fence, across the street, and landed in the neighbor's pool with a spectacular splash.
"How did you DO that?" Leo exclaimed.
"The secret," the sphinx winked, "is believing the ball wants to fly where you send it. Friendship with the game matters more than perfect form. Would you like to play together?"
For an hour, they played catch. The sphinx taught Leo to feel the ball's energy in his hands, to trust his instincts, and most importantly, to believe in himself even when he missed.
"I must return home now," the sphinx said finally, touching the glowing cable. "But never forget — you're never truly alone when you love something with all your heart."
With a swirl of orange hair and golden sparkles, she vanished.
That afternoon, Leo hit his first home run. Every time he plays baseball now, he remembers his magical friend and smiles, knowing that somewhere beyond the sky, a sphinx is cheering him on.
And sometimes, when he hits the ball just right, he thinks he hears gentle chiming laughter in the wind.
