The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball

Leo loved running. He ran everywhere – to school, to the park, even to breakfast. One hot afternoon, Leo was playing baseball with his friends when his favorite red hat blew off his head and rolled down the street.

Leo chased after his hat, running faster than he ever had before. The hat kept rolling until it stopped under a giant palm tree in old Mr. Henderson's yard. But when Leo reached for his hat, something magical happened.

The palm tree began to shimmer and glow. Slowly, it transformed into a golden creature – a sphinx! The sphinx had the body of a lion, eagle wings, and the face of a kind woman with wise, sparkling eyes.

"Hello, Leo," the sphinx said in a voice like wind chimes. "I've been watching you play baseball. It looks like wonderful fun."

Leo's mouth fell open. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things," the sphinx smiled. "I've slept beneath this palm tree for one hundred years. Your laughter woke me up."

Leo noticed the sphinx looked lonely. "Would you like to learn to play baseball?"

For the next hour, Leo taught the sphinx how to hold the bat, how to throw the ball, and how to run the bases. The sphinx was a quick learner, her golden fur shining in the sunlight. When Leo placed his red hat on her head, she looked delighted.

"I never knew having friends could be this wonderful," the sphinx said, her wings fluttering with joy.

When the sun began to set, painting the sky pink and orange, the sphinx knew it was time to sleep again. "Thank you, Leo. You showed me that even after one hundred years, there's always something new to learn."

She transformed back into the palm tree, and Leo's hat rested gently against her trunk.

Every day after school, Leo visits the palm tree. Sometimes he leaves his hat there overnight, because he knows the best friends are the ones who share their favorite things – even if they happen to be magical sphinxes who love baseball.
