The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball

Maya's friend Leo had the wildest hair anyone had ever seen—it stuck out in every direction like he'd been struck by lightning. But that was before the actual lightning came.

It was a Tuesday evening, and they were playing catch in the park when the sky turned purple. Thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy. Then—FLASH! Lightning struck the old oak tree, and where the tree had been, a creature appeared.

It was a sphinx, with the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman. Her golden eyes sparkled with curiosity.

"Finally," she said, stretching her enormous paws. "I've been waiting 3,000 years for someone to toss me that baseball."

Maya and Leo froze. Leo's baseball glove hung at his side, forgotten.

"You... play baseball?" Maya asked.

"I invented baseball!" the sphinx declared. "In ancient Egypt, we used to hit scarabs with palm branches. Then I took a little nap, and when I woke up, everyone had forgotten me."

She looked sad. Her lion tail drooped.

"We could teach you the modern rules," Leo offered, stepping forward.

"Really?" The sphinx's mane fluffed up with excitement.

That afternoon, they taught the sphinx how to hold a bat, how to throw a curveball, and how to run the bases (which was hard with four legs, but she managed). Her name was Cleo, and she was terrible at baseball but loved every minute.

"Best game ever," Cleo said, munching on a sandwich she'd magically produced. "You know what I learned?"

"What?" asked Maya.

"That having fun matters more than being good at something." Cleo's golden eyes softened. "And having friends makes everything better—even with your wild hair, Leo."

Leo laughed and ruffled his messy hair. Cleo the sphinx became their regular baseball buddy, appearing whenever lightning struck and teaching them that friendship comes in all shapes and sizes—even ones with lion bodies and riddles.

And every time Maya saw lightning after that, she smiled instead of hiding, knowing her friend might appear for another game under the purple sky.
