The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball
Leo loved baseball more than anything in the world. Every afternoon after school, he'd grab his favorite glove and run to the field behind his house. But lately, he felt like someone was watching him.
One sunny day, Leo decided to become a spy and find out who it was. He hid behind the old oak tree and waited very quietly. Sure enough, a magical creature emerged from the bushes! She had the body of a lion, wings like an eagle, and the face of a kind woman. Her long golden hair flowed like a river of sunshine.
"A sphinx!" Leo gasped.
The sphinx jumped, her hair bouncing. "Oh! You found me. I've been watching you play baseball."
Leo stepped out from his hiding spot. "Why were you spying on me?"
The sphinx looked shy. "My family has guarded our mountain for thousands of years. We ask riddles to travelers and protect ancient treasures. But I've always dreamed of something more... exciting. When I see you playing baseball, you look so happy. The way you throw the ball and run around the bases—it's like magic!"
Leo smiled. "Would you like to play?"
"Oh, but I don't know how!" The sphinx's wings drooped.
"I'll teach you!" Leo said. "But wait—what about your duties? What about the bull constellation that guides travelers at night?"
The sphinx giggled. "My brother can guard the mountain tonight. And the bull constellation lights up the sky even when I'm not watching it."
That afternoon, Leo taught the sphinx how to throw a ball. She wasn't very good at first—her wings kept getting in the way! But they laughed and practiced until the sun set behind the mountains. The sphinx's hair flowed behind her as she ran, and for the first time in her life, she felt free.
From that day on, the sphinx became Leo's secret teammate. She learned that being a guardian didn't mean she couldn't also have fun. And Leo learned that sometimes the most unexpected friends make the best friends of all.
Because true magic isn't about ancient riddles or mysterious treasures. True magic is friendship, laughter, and being brave enough to try something new—even if you're a sphinx who loves baseball.
