The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball
Leo discovered the magical sphinx behind the old oak tree in his backyard. She wasn't scary at all—she had sparkly purple wings and wore a baseball cap backward.
"Hi there!" she chirped. "I'm Cleo. Want to play catch?"
Leo's eyes widened. "You know baseball?"
"I LOVE baseball!" Cleo's wings fluttered excitedly. "But I haven't played in forever. Everyone runs away when they see me."
Leo grabbed his glove from the porch. "I'll play with you! But you have to promise not to riddle me to death."
Cleo giggled. "Only if you promise not to hit home runs over my pyramid."
They played until sunset, the sphinx diving and leaping to catch every ball. She was amazing! But then Leo's stomach rumbled.
"Hungry?" Cleo asked. "I have the perfect snack—magical papaya from my garden in Egypt!"
She reached into her pocket and pulled out the sunniest, sweetest-smelling fruit Leo had ever seen. One bite made him feel like he could fly.
"What about something green?" Leo asked. "My mom says I need vegetables."
Cleo wrinkled her nose. "I have enchanted spinach that tastes like chocolate cake..."
Leo's eyes lit up. "Really?"
"Well," Cleo admitted, "it still tastes like spinach. But it gives you super strength!"
They munched on papaya and spinach while watching the stars come out. "You know," Leo said, "we could be a team. The Baseball Sphinx and her human friend."
Cleo's wings shimmered. "I'd like that. But what will other kids say?"
Leo thought for a moment. "They'll say they wish they had a sphinx for a best friend too."
The next day, Leo brought Cleo to the park. At first, everyone stared. But when she hit a ball so high it touched a cloud, and did a happy dance that made everyone laugh, the other kids gathered round.
"Can she teach us to fly?" asked little Mia.
"Can she help me with math?" wondered Sam.
Cleo looked at Leo with grateful eyes. Sometimes the best friends are the ones you least expect—especially if they love baseball, magical fruit, and helping you eat your vegetables.
