The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball
Lily loved summer days at the Oakwood Pool. But this Tuesday felt different.
As she climbed the high diving board, she noticed something strange. The concrete lion statue at the pool's edge blinked—at least, it looked like a blink. Lily rubbed her eyes.
"You noticed," said a deep, rumbly voice. The stone lion stood up, stretching like a cat after a long nap. "I've been watching you practice your dives for weeks. I am Amara, Guardian of the Waters."
"A sphinx!" Lily gasped.
Amara's golden wings shimmered in the sunlight. "Indeed, child. But being a sphinx is lonely work. Everyone fears my riddles and runs away."
Lily's eyes lit up. "I know something fun! My baseball team plays in the park right next door. We need one more player for our big game tomorrow. Would you like to join?"
The sphinx tilted her head. "Baseball? I've watched from afar. It looks like dancing with sticks and stones."
"It's better!" Lily grabbed Amara's paw. "Come meet my friends!"
The next day, Amara transformed her wings into a baseball cap and joined the Oakwood Orioles. Her riddle skills made her an excellent strategist. When she asked, 'What has stitches but cannot sew?' the other team was so confused trying to guess 'a baseball!' that they forgot to watch Amara run home.
The Orioles won their first game ever. Amara's new friends cheered so loudly that even the grumpy neighbor applauded.
"Thank you, Lily," Amara whispered later, back at the pool as stars reflected on the water. "I thought I was too strange to ever belong anywhere."
Lily hugged her friend. "Sometimes the best friends are the ones you never expected to find."
And every summer evening, you could spot the sphinx playing baseball by the pool, teaching children that being different makes you special—and that magic is real, especially when you have friends who believe in you.
