The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball
Behind the old community pool, past the fence where wild roses grew, lived a tiny sphinx named Cleo. She wasn't like the sphinxes from books. She was just the size of a tabby cat, with soft golden fur and wings like a hummingbird.
Cleo's favorite thing was running. Every evening, when the pool closed, she would zoom around the empty deck, her tiny paws pattering softly on the concrete. She loved feeling the wind through her wings.
One hot July afternoon, Lily forgot her favorite baseball glove. When she came back to get it, she saw something amazing. A small golden creature was sitting on the diving board, watching the baseball game beyond the fence.
Cleo's purple eyes sparkled as she followed every pitch, every hit, every catch.
'You like baseball?' Lily whispered, creeping closer.
The sphinx nodded so hard her wings fluttered. 'I wish I could play,' she said in a voice like wind chimes. 'But I'm too small for a real baseball, and I can't leave the pool area after dark.'
Lily's eyes lit up. 'What if we made up our own game?'
Every day that summer, Lily and her friends brought Cleo a special tiny baseball made from a ping pong ball wrapped in yarn. They played 'Sphinx Baseball' on the pool deck. Cleo was the fastest runner anyone had ever seen. She could chase a ball all the way to the deep end and back before anyone else had taken three steps.
The best part was the bonus round. If Cleo caught the ball mid-air, she'd create a magical splash that sent tiny sparkling droplets everywhere, making rainbow arcs across the pool.
'This is the best summer ever,' Cleo said one evening, her golden fur glistening in the sunset. 'I thought I was the only sphinx who loved baseball. But friendship makes everything more fun.'
Lily hugged her friend gently. 'Magic isn't about being special,' she said. 'It's about sharing what you love with the right people.'
And every summer after that, when the baseball season began, the children knew exactly where to find their friend - running joyfully around the pool deck, waiting for the first pitch of the very best game in the whole wide world.
