The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball
In the middle of the magical Desert of Dreams lived a sphinx named Stella. Unlike other sphinxes who guarded ancient treasures and asked riddles, Stella had a secret: she loved baseball.
Every night, when the moon rose like a glowing pearl, Stella would sneak to the oasis where a single palm tree stood. Hidden in its fronds was her most prized possession—a golden baseball, given to her by a traveling magician long ago.
Stella had magnificent purple hair that flowed like grape jelly in the wind. She would practice her pitches under the starlight, dreaming of the day she could play with friends.
One evening, she heard a tiny splash in the oasis pond. A little goldfish named Finley poked his head above the water.
"That's the most beautiful throw I've ever seen!" Finley bubbled.
Stella's lion paws shuffled shyly. "You really think so? I've never played on a real team."
"I know some magical desert creatures who'd love to play!" said Finley. "The sand rabbits can run bases, the cactus owls can catch, and I can be the mascot!"
The next evening, Stella arrived at the oasis to find the whole magical league waiting. The palm tree's fronds had become bleachers, filled with cheering beetles and lizards.
They played until dawn. Stella threw her fastest pitch—her golden baseball glowed like a shooting star as Finley the mascot fish cheered from his special waterproof seat.
"You're not just a guardian of riddles," Finley told her as the sun began to rise. "You're a guardian of fun, too."
Stella smiled, her purple hair sparkling with morning dew. She had finally found what she was looking for—not just baseball, but friendship. And now, every night in the Desert of Dreams, if you listen closely, you can still hear the magical crack of a bat and the roar of the smallest, happiest crowd in the world.
