The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball

Tommy loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he'd grab his favorite glove and head to the backyard diamond his dad had mowed into the grass. But today was different. As Tommy ran toward home plate, he noticed something shimmering near the old oak tree.

Being the neighborhood's best spy—well, that's what he called himself because he loved investigating mysteries—Tommy crept closer. There, half-buried in the dirt, sat a tiny golden pyramid no bigger than his baseball. It glowed with soft light, and right on top perched the tiniest sphinx he'd ever seen.

The sphinx opened amber eyes and yawned like a cat. "Finally, someone who loves games!" she squeaked.

Tommy dropped his glove. "You can talk?"

"I'm Cleo," the sphinx said, stretching her tiny wings. "I've been waiting in this pyramid for three thousand years for someone to play baseball with me!"

"But... you're a magical sphinx from ancient times," Tommy said, picking her up gently. "Why baseball?"

Cleo giggled. "In my time, we played games with stones and riddles. Baseball seems much more fun! I used to watch children play through the magic of the pyramid." Her face fell. "But I haven't had a friend in so very long."

Tommy smiled. "Well, you have one now."

Every afternoon that summer, Tommy taught Cleo how to hit and catch. She learned quickly, her golden wings helping her fly to catch impossible balls. In return, she taught Tommy something even more special—that true friends come in all sizes, and the best games are the ones played together.

When summer ended, Cleo had to return to her pyramid to sleep for another hundred years. But she left Tommy with the greatest gift of all: a tiny golden baseball that would always glow when true friendship was near.

Tommy became the best player on his team, but he never forgot the magical lesson from his smallest friend—that opening your heart to someone different brings the most wonderful adventures.
