The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball

Leo loved his old baseball cap. It was blue with a lightning bolt, and he wore it everywhere. But one sunny Saturday, something magical happened at his baseball game.

Leo stood at home plate, gripping his bat tight. The pitcher wound up and threw the ball. Leo swung—CRACK! The ball sailed high into the clouds, higher than anyone had ever seen. It disappeared into a mysterious fog that suddenly appeared above the field.

"I'll get it!" Leo called, chasing after where the ball had gone.

The fog led him behind the old oak tree near the park, where something incredible waited. A giant sphinx sat there, golden wings folded, with the body of a lion and the head of a wise creature. The sphinx was holding Leo's baseball!

"You hit this farther than any mortal child," the sphinx rumbled kindly. "I am Sphinxara, guardian of the sky between worlds. I've watched you play. You have true spirit."

Leo's eyes went wide. "That's my ball! Can I have it back?"

Sphinxara smiled. "First, you must answer my riddle. But unlike my grumpy cousins, I promise this one is fun."

Leo nodded eagerly.

"What has a crown but no king, gives you courage when you wear it, and travels everywhere with you yet asks for nothing?"

Leo thought hard, then touched his head and grinned. "My hat!"

"Correct!" Sphinxara applauded with giant paws. "You are clever and brave. Take your ball—and never stop playing with such joy." She tossed the ball back, and it landed perfectly in Leo's glove.

"Thank you!" Leo called.

"One more thing," Sphinxara added with a wink. "Whenever you wear your hat, I'll be cheering for you from above. Now go finish your game!"

Leo raced back to the field just in time. His team couldn't believe he'd found the ball. Leo placed his hat firmly on his head and stepped up to bat again. He could almost hear magical purring from the clouds above.

That day, Leo hit three home runs. And from that day on, whenever he adjusted his favorite hat before a game, he felt a little extra magic—because somewhere, a sphinx was watching, smiling, and whispering, "Play ball!"

The best friends, Leo learned, aren't always the ones you can see. Sometimes they're magical creatures who believe in you from afar.
