The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball
Lily's favorite thing in the world was baseball. Every afternoon after school, she'd grab her glove and head to the backyard to practice pitching. One day, something extraordinary happened.
An old telephone cable near the fence began to glow with golden light. Lily stepped closer, and suddenly the air shimmered like rainbows. From the magical cable emerged a creature she'd only seen in books—a sphinx!
The sphinx had the body of a lion and the head of a wise human, with wings that sparkled like morning dew.
"Greetings, young one," the sphinx rumbled gently. "I am Cleo, and I have traveled through the magic cable to learn something new."
Lily's eyes went wide. "You're real! But... what do you want to learn?"
"I have watched you from my world," Cleo said. "You throw that white ball with such joy. I want to play this... baseball!"
Lily giggled. "I'll teach you!"
She showed Cleo how to hold the ball, how to stand, and how to throw. Cleo tried her best, but her lion paws were too big, and the ball kept rolling into the garden.
Just then, a large brown bear wandered out of the nearby woods. Lily gasped, but the bear simply sat down and watched them with gentle eyes.
"That's Bernard!" Cleo said happily. "He followed me through the cable. Bernard loves games."
Bernard the bear proved to be a natural at baseball. With his big paws, he could catch any ball Lily threw. Cleo cheered for both of them, her wings fluttering with excitement.
They played until sunset, laughing and learning together. Lily realized that the best things in life—like friendship and fun—can come from the most unexpected places.
"Will you come back tomorrow?" Lily asked as Cleo prepared to leave.
"Every day," Cleo promised. "Friends who play together, stay together."
That night, Lily fell asleep with her baseball glove, dreaming of sphinxes, bears, magical cables, and the wonderful game that brought them all together.
