The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball

Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, he'd grab his glove and run to the old field behind his house. But one hot summer day, something magical happened. A thick golden cable appeared from nowhere, stretching from the baseball field all the way to the mysterious lake beyond the trees. Being a curious boy, Leo decided to follow it.

At the end of the cable, he couldn't believe his eyes. Sitting by the water's edge was a real sphinx! She had the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman, with golden wings folded neatly at her sides.

'Hello, young one,' the sphinx said in a voice like gentle bells. 'I've been watching you play. You have quite an arm.' Leo was too surprised to speak. 'I am Cleo,' she continued, 'and I've waited a hundred years for someone to help me. I love baseball, but I can't play alone.'

Leo's eyes went wide. 'You want to play baseball?'

Cleo nodded. 'But there's one problem. I'm too heavy to run the bases.' She looked at the lake sadly. 'I wish I could go swimming like the fish, but lions don't swim.'

Leo thought hard. Then he had an idea! 'What if we play in the water? You could float while we play!'

And that's exactly what they did. Leo learned that baseball in water was even more fun than on land. The sphinx was amazing at batting, sending balls flying into the clouds. When she slid into home plate, she made the biggest splash Leo had ever seen!

They played every day that summer. Cleo taught Leo about ancient magic, and Leo taught Cleo about the joy of games and friendship. Before she returned to her hundred-year sleep, Cleo gave Leo a special baseball made of stardust.

'Whenever you feel lonely,' she whispered, 'throw this ball, and I'll hear you.'

Leo kept that magical baseball forever, and sometimes on quiet summer evenings, he still throws it toward the lake. A splash always answers back, reminding him that the best friends can be found in the most unexpected places.
