The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball
Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he'd grab his favorite glove and run to the old park behind his house. His fastball was getting faster and faster!
One afternoon, Leo noticed something strange. A pair of golden eyes peeked from behind the oak tree near the baseball diamond. Someone was spying on him!
"Hello?" Leo called out, gripping his baseball tight.
To his amazement, a creature stepped out—not a person, but a sphinx! She had the body of a lion and the face of a wise, kind woman. Her feathers shimmered like sunset.
"I've been watching you play," she said softly. "I am Cleo, and I've guarded this park for three thousand years. Never have I seen anything so wonderful as baseball!"
Leo's mouth dropped open. "You're a real sphinx? Like from stories?"
Cleo nodded. "I usually ask riddles to travelers. But you... you throw that ball with such joy. May I try?"
Leo handed her the baseball. Cleo's paw was gentle as she tossed it back. It wasn't very fast, but she threw it straighter than anyone Leo had ever seen!
"You're a natural!" Leo cheered.
For weeks, Leo taught Cleo the game. She learned to catch, to run bases, and even to hit home runs into the clouds. In return, Cleo taught Leo about the stars, ancient secrets, and how to listen to the whispers of the wind.
One day, Leo asked, "Why didn't you ask me any riddles?"
Cleo smiled. "I discovered something better than riddles. Friendship isn't about testing each other. It's about playing together."
Leo realized she was right. True friends don't spy to find faults—they watch because they care.
Now, if you visit that old park at dusk, you might still see them. A boy and his sphinx friend, playing the most magical game of baseball ever, under a sky full of watching stars.
