The Sphinx Who Loved Baseball

Lily loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, she'd grab her glove and run to the park, dreaming of hitting the perfect home run. But there was one problem — she always played alone.

One afternoon, as Lily tossed her ball up and down, she noticed something strange behind the old oak tree. A golden Sphinx was sitting there, watching her with sparkling amber eyes.

"Hello, little one," the Sphinx purred. "I've been watching you play. I'm Cleo, and I'm hiding from the neighborhood spy cat — he's always chasing me!"

Lily's eyes went wide. "A Sphinx! And a spy cat? This is the most exciting thing that's ever happened to me!"

"What's that game you're playing?" Cleo asked, tilting her lion head curiously.

"It's called baseball!" Lily explained. "You hit the ball and run around the bases. Want to learn?"

Cleo's tail swished happily. "I've watched sphinxes build pyramids for thousands of years, but I've never seen anything like THIS game!"

Just then, a sleek black cat peeked around the corner — the spy cat! Cleo ducked behind Lily's legs.

"Don't worry," Lily whispered. "We can practice inside my fort. It's spy-proof!"

All afternoon, Lily taught Cleo how to hold the bat, how to throw, and how to run the bases. Cleo was clumsy at first, her paws slipping on the grass. But she laughed every time she fell, and Lily helped her up again and again.

"Friendship," Cleo said wisely, "is like baseball. You keep trying, even when you miss, and having someone to cheer you on makes everything better."

By sunset, Cleo hit her first home run! The sphinx did a little victory dance, and Lily cheered so loudly that birds flew out of the trees.

"You're my best friend," Lily said, hugging Cleo's golden neck.

"And you taught me," Cleo replied, "that the best adventures aren't about finding ancient treasures. They're about finding friends who believe in you."

From that day on, Lily never played baseball alone again. And somewhere in the neighborhood, a spy cat wondered why the golden Sphinx never seemed to be where he expected — she was always too busy playing baseball with her favorite human.
