The Sphinx Who Lost Her Smile
Lily loved exploring the beach after storms. That's when the most interesting treasures washed up from the deep blue **water**. One rainy afternoon, she found something extraordinary — a tiny golden **sphinx** no bigger than her palm, with emerald eyes that sparkled even in the gray light.
"Hello there, little friend," Lily whispered, tucking the sphinx into her pocket. But when she got home and set the sphinx on her pillow, something magical happened. The tiny creature grew until she was the size of a cat, stretching her magnificent wings.
"Thank you for rescuing me," said the sphinx in a voice like wind chimes. "I've been asleep for a hundred years. My name is Cleo, and I need your help."
Lily's eyes widened. "Help with what?"
"My brother," Cleo said sadly. "He's under a sleeping curse near the old lighthouse. Everyone calls him a **zombie** because he walks so slowly and never speaks, but he's actually the sweetest sphinx. He just needs true friendship's spark to wake up."
Lily grabbed her favorite brush — the one with the softest bristles. "I have an idea!"
Together they hurried to the lighthouse, where a pale sphinx shuffled in circles, his beautiful mane tangled and matted. He looked like he was moving through thick syrup.
"His **hair**," Cleo gasped. "The curse tangled it so tight it's keeping his magic trapped!"
Lily gently brushed the sphinx's knotted hair, singing songs her grandmother taught her. With each stroke, the knots vanished. The zombie sphinx began to move faster. His eyes — the same emerald green as Cleo's — started to glow.
"You're brushing away the curse," Cleo cried joyfully.
Finally, with one last gentle tug, the last knot disappeared. The sphinx shook out his now-glossy mane and stretched his wings. "I'm awake!" he shouted, dancing around. "I'm awake, and I have friends!"
Cleo and her brother hugged Lily. "You taught us something important," the brother said. "Things that seem scary might just need kindness. And friendship is the strongest magic of all."
From that day on, the three sphinxes became the guardians of the beach, and Lily visited them every summer. Sometimes the scariest-looking problems just need a little brushing and a lot of heart.
