The Sphinx Who Lost Her Smile
Leo loved his blue floppy hat. It had sequins that sparkled in the sun, and he wore it everywhere. One day, while walking by the old fountain, he noticed something strange—the water wasn't bubbling like usual. Instead, it was completely still.
Peeking over the stone edge, Leo saw a tiny sphinx curled up at the bottom of the fountain. She had golden wings like a hummingbird and the kindest eyes he'd ever seen, but she looked terribly sad.
"I can't go home," said the sphinx, floating up to sit on the fountain's edge. "My magic cable broke, and now I'm stuck here."
Leo gasped. A magic cable! She showed him a shimmering silver cord, snapped in two. It was supposed to connect to the moon to power her journey home.
"I can help!" Leo said, though he wasn't sure how. His grandpa played padel at the park, and Leo had watched him many times. Padel was like tennis but with special walls that bounced the ball back. Maybe the sphinx needed someone to bounce her magic back to her?
"Teach me to play padel with the moon!" Leo exclaimed.
The sphinx giggled—her first real smile! She showed Leo how to use his hat like a tiny paddle. They stood by the water, and Leo tilted his blue sequined hat toward the moon. Moonbeams danced across the water like silver fish.
"Now!" cried the sphinx.
Leo caught a moonbeam in his hat and bounced it toward the sphinx. She caught it in her paws and wove it into her broken cable. Spark! The cable glowed, connecting again.
"Thank you, Leo!" She hugged his cheek with soft, warm paws. "You know what? Sometimes the best magic comes from friendship, not fancy tricks."
With a whoosh of golden wings, the sphinx soared up, her silver cable trailing behind her like a stardust ribbon. She waved from the moon, looking smaller than a marble.
Leo's hat still sparkled, but now it had something better than sequins—it had moonlight and magic. Every night, he looked up and saw a tiny sphinx dancing among the stars, playing padel with the moonbeams.
