The Sphinx Who Lost Her Riddles
Lily loved the ancient palm tree in her grandmother's garden. Its trunk was like a wrinkled elephant's leg, and its fronds danced in the wind like green hair. But what Lily loved most was climbing it—high, high up until she could touch the clouds.
One Tuesday, with coconut water on her palm from a morning snack, Lily climbed higher than ever before. And there, nestled in the crook of two fronds, sat a tiny sphinx no bigger than a teacup.
The sphinx had the body of a lion, wings like a dragonfly, and a wise, worried face.
"Greetings, young climber," the sphinx squeaked. "I am Cleopatra, Keeper of Riddles. Or I was... until I lost them."
Lily's eyes went wide. "You lost your riddles?"
Cleopatra nodded sadly. "They flew away like butterflies when I forgot the answer to the most important one: What makes a heart truly happy?"
Lily sat down beside the tiny sphinx. "I don't know the answer either. But maybe we can figure it out together?"
Cleopatra's wings sparkled. "You would help me? A sphinx you just met?"
"Sure!" Lily beamed. "My grandma says adventures are better with a friend."
For three days, Lily and Cleopatra explored everywhere. They raced hermit crabs on the beach, learned the names of all the stars from an old sailor, and helped a lost baby bird find its mother. They laughed so hard that the palm tree shook.
On the fourth morning, Cleopatra gasped. "Lily! I remember!"
"Remember what?"
"The answer!" The sphinx did a joyous flip. "What makes a heart truly happy is sharing adventures with a friend!"
Lily hugged her tiny friend. "We figured it out together!"
Cleopatra's riddles returned, shimmering around her like fireflies. But she didn't leave. "A sphinx's garden is much nicer with a friend," she said wisely.
And every day after school, Lily climbed the palm tree to visit her best friend—the tiny sphinx who taught her that the best riddles are solved not alone, but together.
