The Sphinx Who Lost Her Riddle
Lily loved the old library. It smelled like vanilla and secrets. One rainy afternoon, she discovered a book no one had touched in years. When she opened it, something magical happened.
A tiny sphinx no bigger than a kitten fluttered out! Her wings shimmered like moonlight, and her eyes held the wisdom of a thousand years.
"Oh dear," the sphinx squeaked. "I've forgotten my riddle! Without it, I can't guard the enchanted waterfall anymore."
Lily's eyes went wide. "Enchanted waterfall?"
"Yes! The water there grants one wish to anyone pure of heart. But I must ask a riddle first, or the magic won't work."
Lily packed her backpack with cookies and a flashlight. "Let's go find you a new riddle!"
They traveled through the Whispering Woods, where trees told jokes and squirrels traded acorns for stories. Suddenly, a giant bear stepped onto the path. Lily trembled, but the sphinx flew bravely forward.
"Excuse me, Mr. Bear," the sphinx said. "Do you know any riddles?"
The bear blinked. He was not scary at all—he wore a bowtie and carried a picnic basket!
"I love riddles!" the bear boomed happily. "Here's one: What has to be broken before you can use it?"
Lily and the sphinx thought together.
"An egg!" Lily shouted.
"Correct!" The bear clapped his enormous paws. "I'm Barnaby, by the way. Would you like some honey cake?"
The sphinx's face lit up. "That's a perfect riddle! Thank you, Barnaby!"
They all became friends that day. The sphinx guarded her waterfall once more, Lily wished for endless stories, and Barnaby visited every Sunday for honey cake and riddles.
Lily learned something wonderful: sometimes the scariest problems have the friendliest solutions, and the best magic happens when you help others.
