The Sphinx Who Lost Her Hair
Nova was a small sphinx who lived in the garden of an old wizard's tower. Unlike the great stone sphinxes in Egypt, Nova was magical and alive, with the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle. But Nova had a secret problem. All the other sphinxes had magnificent manes, but Nova's head was completely bald. Not even a single strand of hair grew there.
Every day, Nova would hide behind the fountain, watching the golden goldfish swim in the crystal water. The fish's scales flashed like tiny mirrors.
"What are you spying on today?" asked Barnaby, the wizard's scruffy little dog with floppy ears.
Nova sighed. "Just wishing I had hair like the other sphinxes. They all laugh at me because I'm bald."
Barnaby sat beside her. "You know what I think? I think you're special just the way you are. But maybe we can find you something special to wear."
That night, when the moon was full and silver, Nova and Barnaby crept through the garden. They heard a splash. The goldfish jumped right out of the fountain and transformed into a tiny glowing creature with wings!
"I'm not really a fish," whispered the creature. "I'm a pixie spy, sent by the Fairy Queen to find the kindest heart in all the world. And I think I've found it."
The pixie flew around Nova's head three times, leaving a trail of sparkles. When she landed, Nova's bald head was covered in the most beautiful mane anyone had ever seen—shimmering hair that changed color like a rainbow, glowing softly in the dark.
"You earned this," said the pixie. "Not because you wanted to be beautiful, but because you have a beautiful heart."
The other sphinxes never laughed at Nova again. Instead, they asked her how she got such wonderful hair. Nova would always smile and say, "A little fish taught me that true beauty comes from being kind."
And every night, Nova, Barnaby, and the pixie goldfish would sit together by the fountain, watching the stars and knowing that the best magic is the magic of friendship.
