The Sphinx Who Liked to Run

Maya couldn't sleep. The moonlight painted her bedroom floor in silver, and something strange was happening in her garden. She crept to the window and gasped.

There, among the daisies, stood a small sphinx. Not like the stone ones in books—this one was made of golden light, with tiny wings that sparkled like fireflies. The sphinx was RUNNING in circles around the old oak tree, chasing its own tail like a puppy.

Maya rubbed her eyes. "You're not real!"

The sphinx stopped and looked up. Its eyes were kind and ancient, yet full of mischief. "I'm very real," it said in a voice like wind chimes. "I'm Cleo, and I'm practicing for the Great Pyramid Race. But I have no friend to race with."

"Great Pyramid Race?" Maya whispered.

Celo nodded. "In the Dream Kingdom, there's a pyramid made of wishes. Every night, magical creatures run to the top. Whoever reaches first gets to make their wish come true. But running alone isn't fun."

Maya's heart fluttered. "Could I go?"

"Only if you believe," Cleo said, offering a paw.

Maya took it—and suddenly they were SOMEBODY ELSE, standing before a magnificent pyramid that glowed like a giant amethyst. Other magical creatures were already there: unicorns, dragons, and a talking rabbit.

"On your mark, get set, GO!"

Maya and Cleo took off RUNNING together, side by side. Maya had never run so fast—the wind carried her like laughter. But halfway up, she noticed a baby dragon crying. It had fallen and couldn't fly.

Maya stopped. "Cleo, we have to help!"

"But we'll lose the race!" Cleo said.

"A friend helps friends," Maya said firmly. She lifted the dragon onto her shoulders. "Now we run together!"

They reached the top LAST, but something magical happened. The pyramid's light turned golden, and a voice boomed: "True friendship is the greatest wish of all."

Suddenly, all the racers were at the top, celebrating together. The baby dragon gave Maya a scale that shimmered like a star.

When Maya woke up in her bed, a small golden scale lay on her pillow. She smiled, knowing that kindness was the real magic—and somewhere, in dreams, a sphinx was still running, waiting for its next friend.
