The Sphinx Who Liked to Laugh
In the middle of the Desert of Dreams lived a sphinx named Sophie. Unlike other sphinxes who sat grumpily on stone pillars asking impossible riddles, Sophie loved to tell jokes. Her favorite was: "What has ears but cannot hear? A cornfield!" But nobody ever heard her jokes because travelers were too scared to come close.
One day, Sophie discovered a tiny oasis hidden behind a sand dune. In the crystal-clear pond swam the most beautiful goldfish she had ever seen. His scales shimmered like sunset clouds, and he danced through the water making swirling patterns of bubbles.
"Hello there!" Sophie called, forgetting that sphinxes were supposed to be mysterious and silent. "I'm Sophie. What's your name?"
The goldfish popped to the surface. "I'm Finnegan! And I've never seen a sphinx so close before. You're not going to ask me a riddle, are you? I'm terrible at riddles."
Sophie laughed, and the sound echoed like sparkly wind chimes. "No riddles! I'd much rather tell you a joke. What do you call a fish wearing a bowtie? Sofishticated!"
Finnegan giggled, sending bubbles floating up like tiny crystal balloons. "That's wonderful!" he said. "I've been so lonely in this little pond. Everyone who finds this oasis is always in such a hurry to find treasure, they never want to just talk."
"I know exactly how you feel," Sophie sighed. "Everyone runs away from me before I can even say hello. They think I'm going to eat them or ask them something impossible."
"Well," said Finnegan wisely, "maybe we can be each other's friend. Being a friend means you always have someone to share your jokes with."
From that day on, Sophie visited Finnegan every sunset. She told her silliest jokes, and he taught her the art of making bubble art. Sometimes Finnegan even told her stories about the magical underwater kingdoms only goldfish know about.
Sophie learned something wonderful: the best treasure wasn't gold or jewels, but having a friend who made you laugh until your whiskers tingled. And Finnegan found that having a friend who visited every day was better than any kingdom under the sea.
And whenever travelers finally did come to their oasis, they were surprised to find a sphinx and a goldfish telling jokes together, both laughing so hard that the magic of friendship filled the desert air like invisible sparkles.
Moral: True friends find joy in each other's company, no matter how different they may seem.
