The Sphinx Who Learned to Swim

Lily loved the old pond behind her house. Every summer afternoon, she went swimming in its cool, blue water, imagining it was a magical kingdom beneath the surface.

One day, while floating on her back and watching fluffy clouds drift by, she noticed something peculiar. A large golden creature sat on the mossy bank, its lion body gleaming in the sunlight and its human face looking curiously at the water.

A sphinx! In her backyard!

Lily swam closer. The sphinx looked sad.

"Why are you crying?" Lily asked, dripping water as she pulled herself onto the grass.

The sphinx sighed. "I guard the ancient Temple of Riddles, but all the other mythical creatures are having a swimming party in the Crystal Lake. They invited me, but... I've never been in water. Sphinxes don't swim."

"Everyone can learn to swim!" Lily said with a big smile. "My grandpa taught me last summer."

"But I need a special vitamin first," the sphinx said. "My grandmother said only the Bravery Vitamin from the deep sea can make a sphinx brave enough to swim."

Lily's eyes sparkled. "I know where we can find it!"

Hand in paw, they walked to the garden where Lily's grandmother grew herbs and vegetables. Among the tomatoes and cucumbers grew bright orange flowers—calendula, which her grandmother called "sunshine vitamins" because they made people happy and brave.

"These aren't from the sea," the sphinx worried.

"But they're full of sunshine, and sunshine is everywhere—even in the ocean!" Lily explained. "That's what makes the water sparkle, remember?"

The sphinx thought about this and finally nodded. Together, they made a brave face and ate one bright petal each. Then, holding hands again, they waded into the pond.

At first, the sphinx was scared. But Lily showed her how to paddle her paws and blow bubbles. Soon, the sphinx was laughing and splashing, discovering that the real Bravery Vitamin wasn't something you eat—it was the courage to try something new with a friend by your side.

That evening, as Lily walked home, she knew the best magic wasn't in potions or vitamins. It was in friendship, kindness, and being brave enough to help others find their courage too.
