The Sphinx Who Learned to Swim
Lily loved swimming. Every summer day, she'd leap into the cool blue lake behind her house, splashing until her toes wrinkled like prunes. But this summer, something magical happened.
While swimming near the old willow tree, she spotted something peculiar. A golden creature sat on the mossy bank—wings folded, lion paws tucked neatly, and a face like a kind Egyptian princess. A sphinx!
"Hello," said Lily, treading water.
The sphinx blushed. "I'm Cleo. I've been watching you swim. It looks like flying, but wetter."
Lily laughed. "It's fun! Want to learn?"
Cleo shook her head nervously. "Sphinxes don't swim. We guard treasures and ask riddles. Water scares me."
"Everyone's afraid of something," Lily said kindly. "I used to be afraid of the dark. Then my friend showed me the stars."
Cleo's golden eyes widened. "You're not afraid?"
"Not with a friend."
For weeks, Lily visited Cleo by the lake. They played riddles, shared picnics, and slowly, Cleo inched closer to the water's edge. One hot afternoon, Cleo finally dipped one paw in.
"It's not scary," she whispered.
"Just like flying," Lily smiled.
That day, Cleo swam for the first time, her wings creating gentle waves. She splashed and dove, discovering that sphinxes could swim after all—and swim beautifully!
"You were right," Cleo said later, drying in the sun. "Swimming IS like flying. But better."
"Because you have a friend?" Lily asked.
Cleo nodded. "Because I have a friend who believed in me."
That summer, they learned that the best magic isn't in spells or treasures—it's in friendship, and being brave enough to try something new with someone who believes in you.
And every summer after, Lily and Cleo swam together, two friends proving that even the most unexpected creatures can make the best companions—especially when one teaches the other that some fears are just adventures waiting to happen.
