The Sphinx Who Learned to Swim
In the golden desert where sand dunes rolled like ocean waves, there lived a young sphinx named Cleo. Unlike other sphinxes who loved sitting still and asking riddles, Cleo was always running across the desert, her paws kicking up tiny dust storms.
One day, while running farther than ever before, Cleo discovered something magical—a crystal-clear oasis with tall palm trees swaying in the breeze. The water sparkled like diamonds under the sun.
Cleo had never seen so much water in one place. She approached cautiously, her golden eyes wide with wonder. Near the water's edge, a small turtle popped up.
"Hello!" said the turtle. "I'm Tully. Are you here for swimming?"
"Swimming?" Cleo repeated. "Sphinxes don't swim. We're desert creatures. We'd sink like stones!"
Tully laughed. "Nobody sinks if they know how. Want me to teach you?"
Cleo's heart fluttered like a trapped bird. Water looked scary, but also beautiful. She thought about all the running she did, always staying safe on land. Maybe it was time to be brave.
"Yes," Cleo said, surprising herself. "Teach me."
First, Cleo just dipped her paw in. The water felt cool and gentle, like a soft blanket. Then she waded in deeper, with Tully guiding her. When she finally let herself float, something wonderful happened—she didn't sink at all! The water held her like a loving friend.
By sunset, Cleo was swimming in circles, doing splashes that made rainbows in the air. The palm trees seemed to clap their fronds in the wind.
"I did it!" Cleo cheered. "I'm swimming!"
"You're a natural," Tully said with a smile. "Sometimes the bravest thing is trying something new."
Cleo returned to her desert home, but now she visited the oasis every day. She learned that being brave doesn't mean not being scared—it means trying new things even when you are. And sometimes, the most wonderful discoveries are just beyond what we know.
The other sphinxes couldn't believe it when they saw Cleo swimming and diving and racing Tully through the water. But Cleo just smiled, water droplets glistening on her golden fur. Some sphinxes loved riddles, she decided, but she loved adventures—and friends.
