The Sphinx Who Learned to Swim
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's dusty attic. One rainy afternoon, she found a tall purple hat tucked behind an old trunk. When she placed it on her head, the attic vanished!
She stood beside a sparkling blue pool of water. But this was no ordinary pool. Rising from the center was a magnificent sphinx—with the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman. Her golden fur gleamed in the sunlight.
"Welcome, small one," the sphinx said in a voice like wind chimes. "I am Cleopatra. I have guarded this magical pool for a thousand years."
Lily's eyes widened. "Are you going to ask me a riddle?"
Cleopatra shook her great head. "No riddles today. I watch the fish and frogs swim freely, but I have never learned. Would you teach me?"
Lily gasped. "A sphinx who wants to go swimming? But sphinxes don't swim!"
"That is exactly why I must learn," Cleopatra said wisely. "Sometimes the bravest thing is trying something new."
Lily smiled. "I'll be your friend and teach you!"
Every day that summer, Lily wore the magic hat to visit Cleopatra. At first, the great sphinx was afraid. But Lily held her paw and showed her how to paddle. They practiced floating and blowing bubbles.
Finally, the day came. Cleopara took a deep breath and slipped into the water. Her heavy lion body floated! She kicked her powerful legs and glided through the pool like a golden ship.
"I'm doing it!" Cleopatra splashed joyfully. "I'm swimming!"
Lily cheered and jumped in beside her new friend. They swam together all afternoon, the sphinx and the girl, both brave enough to try something new.
When summer ended, Lily gave Cleopatra one last hug. "You taught me something too," Lily said. "Being brave doesn't mean you're not scared. It means trying anyway."
Cleopatra touched Lily's cheek with her paw. "And true friends help each other grow."
Lily kept the purple hat safe, knowing that whenever she needed courage or a magical friend, Cleopatra would be waiting—swimming happily in her enchanted pool.
