The Sphinx Who Learned to Swim

Lily loved summer evenings. The air was warm, the crickets sang, and her family's pool glowed like liquid moonlight.

One night, while everyone else slept, Lily tiptoed outside to swim. But something surprising was floating in the middle of the pool.

It was small and golden, with tiny wings and a face like a curious cat. A sphinx! But this sphinx looked frightened, clinging to a floating noodle like it was a lifeboat.

"Are you okay?" Lily whispered, wading into the water.

The sphinx's large eyes widened. "I am Cleo, guardian of the Puzzle Garden," she squeaked. "I fell through a magic portal! But sphinxes cannot swim! The water is scary!"

Lily smiled. She knew just what to do. Her grandfather had taught her to swim last summer, starting with small steps.

"I'll teach you," Lily said gently. "First, just splash your paws. See? The water feels nice!"

Cleo dipped one golden paw. Then another. Soon, the tiny sphinx was giggling, splashing water everywhere.

"Now float on your back like a starfish," Lily said, showing how.

Cleo tried and failed, but Lily caught her. "That's okay! Learning takes courage."

They practiced all night under the stars. By dawn, Cleo was paddling around the pool like she'd been swimming forever.

"Thank you, Lily," Cleo said, hugging her friend. "You taught me that trying new things isn't so scary when someone believes in you."

The pool began to shimmer. Cleo's portal was opening.

"Will I ever see you again?" Lily asked.

"Whenever you swim," Cleo promised, "think of me, and I'll feel your friendship across the worlds."

Cleo flew through the glowing light, leaving behind a single golden feather.

Lily kept it safe. And whenever she went swimming, she remembered: facing fears with a friend makes you braver than you ever knew you could be.
