The Sphinx Who Learned to Swim

Lily discovered the magical pond on the hottest day of summer. Hidden behind weeping willows, the water sparkled with an unusual golden light. She couldn't resist swimming in its cool depths.

But something strange happened when she surfaced. A small creature sat on a mossy rock—a tiny sphinx no bigger than a cat, with golden fur and wings like a dragonfly's. Unlike the scary stone sphinxes in her storybooks, this one had soft, worried eyes.

"I've been waiting so long for someone to visit," the sphinx said sadly. "But I can't join you. I'm afraid of water."

Lily's heart went out to the lonely creature. "I'll teach you! Swimming is like flying through water. Look at your wings—you were made for it!"

Every day that week, Lily returned to the pond. At first, the sphinx only dipped a paw in. Then, with Lily's patient encouragement, she learned to float. Finally, on the fourth day, something magical happened. The sphinx spread her wings and glided across the water's surface, leaving a trail of golden sparkles.

"I'm doing it!" she cried joyfully. "I'm swimming!"

That's when the sphinx revealed her secret: she was the guardian of forgotten wishes, and her fear had kept her from granting them. Now that she'd learned courage through friendship, she could finally help others.

"Because you believed in me," the sphinx told Lily, "I can believe in others too. That's the magic of true friendship."

Lily visited her magical friend all summer, swimming together through sparkling adventures. And whenever she felt afraid of something new, she remembered: even sphinxes have to learn to be brave, one splash at a time.
