The Sphinx Who Forgot to Smile
Luna the fox had the softest orange fur in the Enchanted Forest, but she had the biggest curiosity too. Every night, she would sneak out of her den to explore the magical woods while other animals slept.
One evening, Luna discovered a path she had never seen before. It was covered in sparkling purple flowers that hummed soft lullabies. Being a clever fox, Luna followed the path until she reached a clearing. There, half-hidden behind enormous glowing mushrooms, sat an ancient stone sphinx.
The sphinx looked sad. His great stone wings drooped, and his hieroglyph-covered face looked lonely.
"Hello," said Luna bravely.
The sphinx blinked his stone eyes. "Oh! A visitor! I haven't had a visitor in three hundred years. I'm so lonely I've forgotten how to smile."
Luna felt bad for the giant creature. "I can help! Let me find you something wonderful."
As Luna trotted away, she heard a strange sound: *shuffle, shuffle, moan.*
Peeking behind a rainbow-colored bush, she saw the most unexpected sight—a zombie! But this zombie wasn't scary at all. He wore overalls covered in flower seeds, and he was gently planting moonflowers with his green, mossy fingers.
"Excuse me," Luna said. "But aren't zombies supposed to be scary?"
The zombie looked up slowly. "Not me. I'm Barnaby. I was a gardener when I was alive, and I loved it so much that I came back as a zombie to keep gardening forever. I take care of all the magical plants."
Luna's tail wagged excitedly. "Barnaby! The sphinx needs your help. He's forgotten how to smile!"
Barnaby's mossy face lit up. "I know just what to do!"
Together, Luna and Barnaby returned to the sphinx. Barnaby pulled from his pocket a handful of giggle-seeds—special flowers that make anyone who smells them laugh.
"Watch this," Barnaby whispered, planting the seeds around the sphinx's great stone paws.
Instantly, tiny green sprouts popped up, then bloomed into bright yellow flowers shaped like tiny laughing mouths. As their sweet scent reached the sphinx's nose, something magical happened. The sphinx's shoulders shook. His eyes crinkled. And then—a great rumble echoed through the clearing as the sphinx began to laugh!
"Hoo-hoo-hoo!" the sphinx chortled, and for the first time in centuries, his stone face curved into a magnificent smile.
"Thank you both!" the sphinx beamed. "I'd forgotten that the best magic of all is friendship."
That night, Luna learned something important: even the oldest, loneliest hearts can find joy again with the help of unexpected friends. And from that day on, the sphinx, the fox, and the zombie gardener had wonderful adventures together under the starry sky.
