The Sphinx Who Forgot How to Smile

Lily was running through her backyard when she noticed something peculiar. Behind the old oak tree, where usually only dandelions grew, sat a golden sphinx the size of a garden gnome. His wings sparkled like morning dew, and his lion tail curled around his paws in a perfect circle.

"Hello there," Lily said, stopping her running shoes. "Are you lost?"

The sphinx sighed, and tiny clouds of glitter puffed from his nostrils. "I'm not lost, little one. I'm just...

forgotten."

"Forgotten?"

"I'm the Keeper of Riddles, protector of ancient wisdom. But somewhere along the way, I forgot how to smile. Without joy, my riddles have become dusty and sad."

Lily's eyes widened. She remembered what her grandmother said about happiness being like a magical vitamin for the soul — something you need every single day to stay strong and bright.

"I can help!" Lily exclaimed. "What's your favorite riddle?"

The sphinx's golden eyes softened. "What has wings but cannot fly, holds wisdom but cannot speak, and becomes beautiful only when shared?"

Lily thought hard, running through possibilities in her mind. Then she gasped. "A story! Stories have wings because they travel, hold wisdom, and they're most beautiful when you tell them to others!"

The sphinx's eyes widened. A tiny smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. Like magic, golden dust began to swirl around them.

"Yes! You've reminded me! Wisdom isn't about hoarding secrets — it's about sharing them with joy!"

The sphinx's smile grew until his whole face beamed. He spread his sparkling wings and rose into the air, leaving behind a trail of golden light.

"Thank you, Lily," he called down. "You've given me the best vitamin of all — kindness wrapped in wonder!"

Lily waved as he disappeared into the clouds. From that day on, she made sure to share stories and smiles wherever she went, knowing that joy is the most powerful magic of all.
