The Sphinx Who Forgot How to Smile
Lily loved the old swimming pool at the bottom of her garden. It had been empty for years, but she imagined it filled with magical water instead of leaves. One hot afternoon, she was running laps around the cracked concrete when something amazing happened.
A golden sphinx appeared beside the diving board! He had the body of a lion and the face of a wise old man, but his eyes looked terribly sad.
"Hello," said Lily, stopping mid-run. "I'm Lily. What's wrong?"
The sphinx sighed. "I am Sonu, the Guardian of Dreams. For a thousand years, I've protected children's wishes. But something terrible has happened. I forgot how to smile!"
Lily couldn't believe it. A sphinx who couldn't smile?
"What made you smile before?" she asked.
Sonu thought for a moment. "Children running and playing. Their laughter was like sunshine to my heart. But children stopped coming to this pool. The magic faded, and so did my smile."
Lily had an idea. "Come with me!"
She grabbed Sonu's paw and started running through her garden. She showed him her favorite flower patch, her secret hiding spot behind the oak tree, and the butterfly bush. She ran in circles, jumped over roots, and spun until she was dizzy.
At first, Sonu just watched. But soon, his golden tail started swishing. Then he began trotting beside her. Before long, the old sphinx was running too!
They ran through the meadow like the wind. Sonu's golden mane flowed behind him. His paws barely touched the grass. For the first time in centuries, he felt light and free.
Suddenly, Sonu let out a happy roar and started laughing. The sound was like bells ringing. A big, warm smile spread across his face!
Lily smiled too. She had helped Sonu remember what joy felt like.
"Thank you, Lily," said the sphinx, his eyes twinkling. "You taught me something important. Happiness isn't found in pools of magic water. It's found in friendship and fun, right here in everyday moments."
From that day on, Lily and Sonu were best friends. And every afternoon, you could find them running through the garden, two hearts full of joy, sharing the magic of simply being together.
