The Sphinx Who Forgot How to Dream

Lily loved swimming more than anything in the world. Every summer day, she'd dive into the ocean behind her grandmother's house, pretending she was a mermaid exploring secret kingdoms.

One afternoon, while swimming deeper than usual, Lily noticed something strange — a soft golden light coming from beneath the coral reef. She followed it down and discovered a hidden cave filled with shimmering papayas that glowed like tiny suns.

"They're beautiful, aren't they?" said a gentle voice.

Lily turned to see a small sphinx, no bigger than a dolphin, with wings made of sea glass and fur that sparkled like pearls. Unlike the scary sphinxes from storybooks, this one had kind eyes and a friendly smile.

"I'm Coral," the sphinx said. "I've guarded these magic papayas for three hundred years. They make wishes come true, but I've forgotten how to wish."

Lily's heart went out to the lonely creature. "You don't have to guard them alone anymore. Let's play!"

That summer, Lily taught Coral how to race through the waves, how to dance with the seahorses, and how to laugh so hard that tiny bubbles rose to the surface like silver champagne. In return, Coral showed Lily the most beautiful underwater places — forests of rainbow coral, castles made of pearls, and meadows where starfish bloomed like flowers.

On the last day of summer, Lily brought something special — her grandmother's famous papaya pie.

Coral took a bite and gasped. "This tastes like... like my old home! Like sunshine and sand and joy!"

For the first time in centuries, the sphinx made a wish: "I wish to remember who I was before I became a guardian."

The glowing papayas pulsed brighter, and suddenly Coral remembered — she had been a human child too, once upon a time, transformed by magic long ago. Now she could choose to become human again.

But Coral surprised Lily. "I'll stay," she said. "But now I'll guard these papayas with joy, not loneliness. And you'll visit every summer, and we'll teach each other new things."

Lily promised she would. And every summer after that, the girl and the sphinx would spend their days swimming through enchanted waters, eating papaya pie, and discovering that the best magic of all is friendship.
