The Sphinx Who Forgot His Riddles

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's dusty attic. On rainy Saturdays, she'd spend hours hunting through old trunks and boxes. One afternoon, she found something peculiar—a tall purple hat tucked behind a stack of books.

"What's this?" Lily whispered, lifting the hat gently. It shimmered like the inside of a seashell.

When she placed it on her head, the attic walls melted away like sugar in tea. Suddenly, Lily stood in a golden desert where the sand sparkled like tiny stars.

"Welcome, young traveler," a gentle voice rumbled.

Before her sat a magnificent sphinx with golden fur and enormous wings that sparkled in the sunlight. But the strangest thing was his hair—a wild, colorful mane that changed from blue to pink to green, shimmering like rainbows.

"I'm Lily," she said, bravely stepping closer. "Who are you?"

The sphinx's face fell sadly. "I am Spero, the Sphinx of Riddles. But I have forgotten my riddles! Without them, I cannot guard the secret treasures of imagination."

Lily noticed the sphinx's magnificent hair was dull and gray.

"What happened to your hair?" she asked.

"Without riddles to share, my magic fades," Spero sighed. "I haven't had a visitor in one hundred years."

Lily's heart felt heavy. "Maybe I can help! I love riddles."

The sphinx's eyes brightened. "Would you really?"

Lily nodded. "What has wings but cannot fly, and sleeps with one eye open?"

Spero's hair began to shimmer! "A... a... I don't know!"

"A needle!" Lily giggled.

The sphinx roared with joy, and his hair turned a brilliant purple. "Another!"

"What gets wet while drying?" Lily asked.

Spero's hair turned pink. "A towel!" he guessed correctly.

"Yes!" Lily cheered.

For hours they shared riddles. With each answer, Spero's hair grew more beautiful, and his wings stronger. Lily realized something important—friendship isn't about having all the answers. It's about helping each other find them.

"Lily," Spero said warmly, "you've restored my magic. For this, I grant you one wish."

Lily thought carefully. "I wish to be your friend forever."

The sphinx smiled. "That wish is already granted, my dear friend."

When Lily opened her eyes, she was back in the attic, the purple hat still on her head. But now, whenever she wore it, she could hear Spero's gentle voice in her heart, reminding her that the best adventures are the ones shared with friends.

And every time it rained, Lily would run to the attic, put on her magical hat, and visit her sphinx friend for more riddles and more adventures.
