The Sphinx Who Forgot His Riddles

Lily always walked past the old fountain in the park, but today something magical happened. As she tossed a penny into the sparkling water, the surface began to shimmer and glow. Suddenly, a golden sphinx rose from the water, shaking droplets from his magnificent wings.

"Hello, young one," the sphinx said in a voice like gentle thunder. "I am Phineas, Keeper of Riddles. But I'm afraid I've forgotten them all!"

Lily's dog, Barnaby—a scruffy terrier with one floppy ear—bounded forward, wagging his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. He licked the sphinx's nose.

"Barnaby likes you!" Lily laughed. "Maybe we can help you remember your riddles."

Phineas's eyes sparkled like diamonds. "That would be wonderful! I haven't been able to guard the enchanted palm grove without my riddles. The magical coconuts there grant one wish each—but only to those who can answer my puzzles."

The three new friends set off toward the grove, where towering palm trees swayed in the breeze like dancing ladies. Their leaves whispered secrets in the wind.

"What has a bottom at the top?" Phineas suddenly cried out. "I remember one!"

Barnaby barked and chased his tail, spinning in circles until he fell over dizzy. Lily giggled. "Your legs! Because when you do a headstand, your legs are at the top!"

"Correct!" Phineas cheered. More riddles flooded back. "What can you catch but not throw?"

Lily thought hard. She looked at the water nearby, where fish swam and dragonflies zoomed. "A cold! You can catch a cold, but you can't throw it!"

By sunset, Phineas had remembered all his riddles. He placed a special golden coconut in Lily's hands. "For helping me, you may have a wish."

Lily looked at Barnaby, then at the sphinx. "I wish that every child could have a friend as wonderful as you two—and that they'd always remember that the best adventures happen when you help others."

The coconut glowed, and sparkles drifted into the sky, carrying Lily's wish to children everywhere.

"Thank you, Lily," Phineas said. "You taught me something more important than riddles—kindness is the greatest magic of all."

And every evening, if you visit that fountain, you might still see them: Lily, Barnaby, and the sphinx, sharing stories under the palm trees as the water turns to gold in the sunset light.
