The Sphinx Who Forgot Her Riddles

Lily discovered the magic on a Tuesday, behind the library where the old stone sphinx had sat for a hundred years. Most people walked right past her, but Lily always waved hello.

One night, the moonlight made the sphinx's granite eyes twinkle. Then the sphinx blinked.

"Hello, small friend," she said, her voice like wind through ancient temples. "I haven't spoken in ninety-seven years."

Lily's heart jumped like a frog. "You're alive!"

"Barely," the sphinx sighed. "I've forgotten my riddles. Without them, I'm just a statue with wings."

That's when a fox trotted out of the shadows, her russet fur glowing. "Every creature forgets sometimes. Even me, and I'm supposed to be clever."

"Fiona Fox!" Lily gasped. "My grandma said you help lost souls find their way."

"Only when they're willing to be helped," said Fiona. "The sphinx needs more than riddles. She needs a true friend."

From behind the oak tree lumbered the biggest bull Lily had ever seen, but his eyes were kind and gentle. He was the color of sunrise clouds, with horns that curled like cinnamon sticks.

"I'm Barnaby," he rumbled softly. "I guard the dreams that children forget when they wake up. Would you like to see them?"

Lily nodded, trembling with wonder.

Barnaby lowered his massive head, and Lily saw swirling colors in his eyes—blue and gold, pink and silver. "Here's where dreams live," he whispered. "The sphinx's riddles are hiding here too. She put them away because she thought they weren't good enough."

Lily looked deep into Barnaby's eyes and saw thousands of glowing riddles, each one beautiful and strange. "They're wonderful! Why did you hide them?"

The sphinx looked shy. "Everyone expects sphinxes to ask impossible questions. I just wanted to tell stories."

"So tell stories!" Fiona Fox danced around them, her tail flashing like a flame. "Friendship isn't about being what others expect. It's about being who you truly are."

Lily took the sphinx's stone paw. "I'll be your friend. And I love stories."

The sphinx's face lit up like sunrise. "Then let me tell you about the time the stars got tangled in kite string..."

And every Tuesday night, Lily returned to hear stories, while Barnaby showed her dreams and Fiona Fox led them through hidden paths in the moonlight. The sphinx never asked another riddle again, and that was exactly as it should be.
