The Sphinx Who Forgot Her Riddle

waterfriendsphinx

In the middle of the Whispering Desert stood a small sphinx named Cleo. She had lion paws, golden wings, and the friendliest face any creature had ever seen. But Cleo had a big problem. Every sphinx is supposed to guard treasure by asking clever riddles. Cleo couldn't remember any riddles at all.

One hot afternoon, Cleo sat beside a sparkling oasis. The cool water lapped against the sand, making tiny splashing sounds. She sighed so deeply that it blew sand into little swirls.

"What's wrong?" asked a voice.

Cleo looked around. Perched on a palm frond was a tiny blue bird with feathers like sapphires.

"I'm a terrible sphinx," Cleo said. "I can't remember any riddles. How will I ever be a proper guardian?"

The bird hopped closer. "Maybe you don't need riddles. Maybe you just need a friend."

Cleo's golden wings fluttered. "A friend?" She had never had a friend before. Sphinxes were supposed to be serious and mysterious.

"I'm Pip," said the bird, dipping his beak into the water. "And I know something you don't know."

"What?" asked Cleo, leaning forward.

"The best treasure isn't gold or jewels," Pip said. "The best treasure is making someone else smile."

Cleo thought about this. The water in the oasis reflected her face. She looked kind, not scary at all.

"So," Pip said, "instead of a riddle, what if you share something? Like the way to this sweet water? Or the best spots to nap in the shade?"

Cleo's eyes brightened. "I know hundreds of comfortable places!"

For the first time in her life, Cleo felt truly proud. She wasn't a riddle-sphinx. She was a helper-sphinx. And that was even better.

"Will you stay with me?" Cleo asked Pip. "We could help travelers together."

Pip fluffed his feathers happily. "I'd love that, Cleo. Friends always work better together."

And so the little sphinx found her purpose—not in mysterious riddles, but in kindness and friendship. The desert travelers didn't mind one bit. They were just happy to find cool water and a warm welcome.
