The Sphinx Who Dreamed of Baseball
Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he'd grab his glove and practice in the park, dreaming of hitting the perfect home run.
One afternoon, Leo's baseball rolled into a mysterious puddle that hadn't been there before. But when he reached in to grab it, his hand didn't touch wet grass—instead, he felt warm sand.
Suddenly, Leo found himself standing beneath a giant pyramid under a starry sky. A creature with a lion's body and a human face watched him with gentle golden eyes.
"I am the Sphinx," the creature rumbled softly. "I've guarded the pyramid for thousands of years, but I've always wondered about that game children play with the bouncing ball."
Leo's eyes widened. "You mean baseball?"
The Sphinx nodded. "In my dreams, I play baseball. But in all these centuries, no one has ever taught me."
Leo's heart swelled with kindness. "I'll teach you!"
For hours, Leo showed the Sphinx how to hold a bat, how to swing, and how to catch. The Sphinx was surprisingly graceful, learning quickly with joy and wonder.
"Now," Leo said, "you need to practice! But there's no water here for swimming to cool down after games."
The Sphinx smiled mysteriously. "Close your eyes."
When Leo opened them, a sparkling oasis pool appeared beside the pyramid. They spent the rest of the afternoon swimming and playing baseball under the desert stars.
"Friendship," the Sphinx said, "is the greatest treasure of all—more precious than gold, more magical than any pyramid."
As the sun began to rise, Leo found himself back in the park, his baseball in his glove. But now, whenever he played baseball, he felt a warm golden glow in his heart, knowing somewhere far away, a Sphinx was playing too, their friendship spanning across time and magic.
