The Sphinx Who Discovered Friendship
High atop the golden dunes of Egypt lived Leo, a very young sphinx. Unlike the ancient sphinxes who sat stone-still and asked impossible riddles to travelers, Leo had soft brown fur instead of stone, and his wings were small and fluffy. The older sphinxes told him he needed to practice being serious and mysterious.
But Leo was curious about everything—especially the shimmering blue oasis he could see from his perch.
One hot afternoon, Leo crept down to the water's edge. There he saw something amazing: a golden retriever dog named Max was happily swimming in the cool lake, splashing and chasing his own tail in the refreshing water.
"Hello!" Leo called, his lion tail twitching with excitement. "I'm Leo. What are you doing?"
Max paddled over, water droplets sparkling on his golden fur. "I'm cooling off! Want to join me?"
Leo hesitated. "Sphinxes don't swim. We guard treasures and ask riddles."
"That sounds boring," said Max. "You're missing out!"
Just then, something tiny and orange flashed through the water—a little goldfish named Finn who lived in the lake. "The sphinx looks worried!" Finn bubbled, surfacing briefly. "Maybe he's afraid of getting wet!"
Leo's ears drooped. "I'm not afraid. I'm just... not sure sphinxes are supposed to have fun."
Max smiled warmly. "I think everyone is supposed to have fun. Watch this!" The dog did a silly belly flop, sending ripples across the water.
Leo couldn't help it—he giggled. Then, slowly, he dipped one paw into the water. It felt wonderful! Soon, Leo was splashing alongside his new friends, his small wings fluttering with joy.
"You know," Finn said wisely, "the best treasure isn't gold or jewels. It's friends who help you discover new things."
From that day on, Leo still sat on his dunes sometimes, but he always made time to visit his friends at the oasis. The other sphinxes thought he was strange, but Leo knew the truth: he had found something more precious than any riddle or treasure—true friendship, discovered in the most unexpected way, while swimming on a magical afternoon.
