The Sphinx Who Couldn't Swim
Lily stood at the edge of Crystal Lake, her toes curled nervously in the warm sand. All the other kids were splashing and laughing in the blue water, but Lily stayed on shore. She was afraid.
"Come in, Lily!" called her best friend Maya, treading water. "It's wonderful!"
Lily shook her head. That's when she noticed something strange on the small island in the middle of the lake. A creature sat there—part lion, part human, with magnificent golden wings. It was a sphinx!
The sphinx looked sad. Lily summoned her courage and waded into the shallow water, then began swimming toward the island with clumsy strokes. Her heart pounded, but she kept going.
"Hello," the sphinx said when Lily finally reached the island. The sphinx had kind amber eyes and a voice like gentle chimes. "I am Cleo. I've been stuck here for three hundred years."
"Why?" Lily asked, dripping wet.
Cleo's wings drooped. "Long ago, a wizard cast a spell. He said I could only leave this island when someone who was afraid of the water swam here to help me. The spell could only be broken by courage, not magic."
Lily's eyes widened. "I'm still learning swimming. I was scared to come here."
"Exactly!" Cleo smiled. "True bravery isn't about not being afraid. It's about doing what matters even when you ARE afraid. You swam across the lake to help a stranger. That's the greatest courage of all."
Cleo spread her golden wings. Suddenly, sparkles filled the air. The sphinx began to rise, but she reached down and offered her paw to Lily.
"Come with me, little friend. Let's show the world what courage looks like."
Together—girl and sphinx, swimming and flying—they returned to shore, where Maya and all the children cheered. Lily had learned something wonderful that day: sometimes the bravest thing you can do is simply take the first step, especially when your heart is pounding. And from then on, Lily never feared the water again, because she knew she was braver than she thought.
