The Sphinx Who Couldn't Swim
Lily loved swimming more than anything in the world. Every summer day, she'd splash and dive in the old pond behind her house, pretending she was a mermaid exploring underwater kingdoms.
One hot afternoon, while Lily was practicing her best butterfly stroke, she noticed something strange. A large golden creature sat on the mossy bank, watching her with enormous amber eyes. It had the body of a lion and the head of a beautiful woman, with the longest, most magnificent hair Lily had ever seen—cascading in golden waves all the way to the ground.
"Are you... a sphinx?" Lily asked, treading water.
The sphinx nodded sadly. "I am Cleo, Guardian of the Riddle Pond. But I have a terrible problem."
Lily swam to shore and sat beside her. "What's wrong?"
Cleo touched her beautiful golden hair. "My hair is magic. It's supposed to help me solve the riddles that keep our pond safe and full of wonder. But yesterday, a mischievous wind tangled it into knots, and now I can't think straight! I need to wash it in the deep water where the moonlight touches first, but..." Her voice dropped to a whisper. "I don't know how to swim."
Lily's eyes lit up. "I can teach you!"
For the next hour, Lily showed Cleo how to float like a leaf, kick like a frog, and move her arms in gentle sweeps. The sphinx was nervous at first, but Lily's patience and encouragement gave her courage.
Finally, Cleo dove into the moonlit deep water. Her golden hair flowed around her like a river of light. Suddenly, the knots untangled themselves! The water sparkled with magic, and Cleo's mind cleared.
"I can think again!" she cried. "And now I know the answer to the pond's oldest riddle—friendship is the strongest magic of all."
From that day on, Cleo and Lily were best friends. Sometimes they swam together, and sometimes Cleo used her magical hair to create beautiful rainbows over the pond. And Lily learned that the best adventures are the ones you share with friends, even if they're sphinxes who don't know how to swim—yet.
