The Sphinx Who Couldn't Swim
Lily loved running through the golden dunes behind her grandmother's house. Every evening, she'd race the sinking sun, her bare feet kicking up tiny clouds of sand. But today, the desert held a secret.
Behind the tallest dune, Lily discovered something amazing—a sparkling pool of water, shimmering like a dropped sapphire. And beside it sat a sphinx.
He wasn't scary like in stories. His stone body was covered in moss, and his lion tail curled peacefully around his paws. But his eyes looked sad.
"Hello," said Lily, bravely stepping closer.
The sphinx sighed, and actual dust puffed out. "Hello, little runner. I am Sphiro, and I have a problem."
"What kind of problem?"
Sphiro pointed a stone paw at the water. "For a thousand years, I've watched the fish dance in there. I've wanted to go swimming more than anything. But stone sinks."
Lily's eyes widened. "You want to go swimming?"
"More than anything!" Sphiro's eyes twinkled. "I have a magic riddle. If someone solves it, I can swim for one whole hour."
"I love riddles!"
"Here it is: I can run but have no legs. I can flow but cannot move. I can quench your thirst but never speak. What am I?"
Lily thought hard, running in circles around the pool. Then she gasped. "Water!"
Sphiro's stone face broke into the biggest smile Lily had ever seen. "Correct!"
Suddenly, his heavy stone body began to glow. He stepped into the water and instead of sinking, he floated! For one magical hour, Lily and Sphiro went swimming together. He splashed and played like a giant puppy, showing her all the beautiful fish he'd watched for centuries.
When the hour ended, Sphiro returned to his spot by the shore, still smiling.
"Thank you, Lily," he said. "You taught me something important. Dreams can come true, but sometimes you need a friend to help make them happen."
Lily ran home, already planning to bring her swimming suit tomorrow. Because the best adventures, she discovered, are the ones you share with friends.
