The Sphinx Who Couldn't Swim

Lily had always been afraid of the water. While other kids splashed and laughed at the neighborhood pool, she sat on the edge, dangling her feet in the cool blue. The water looked like a mysterious world she was too scared to explore.

One hot afternoon, when everyone had gone home, Lily noticed something strange. Near the deep end of the empty pool, a small golden creature sat watching her. It looked like a tiny sphinx from storybooks—lion body, human face, wise old eyes—and it was exactly the size of her cat.

"I've been waiting for you," the sphinx said in a voice like rain on a tin roof.

Lily rubbed her eyes. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things. But I cannot swim." The sphinx dipped one paw into the water. "Perhaps you could teach me?"

"But I don't know how!" Lily cried.

"That's why we're perfect for each other," the sphinx said, climbing onto Lily's shoulder with surprising lightness. "I'll show you courage, and you'll show me swimming. Together, we'll both learn something new."

Day after day, Lily returned to the pool. With the sphinx whispering encouraging words in her ear, she slowly waded deeper. The sphinx explained that all water on Earth was connected—the pool, the ocean, the rain, even the tears people cried when they were sad or happy.

"Water remembers everything," the sphinx said. "When you swim, you swim with every creature who ever loved the water."

One magical afternoon, Lily let go of the pool's edge. With the sphinx clinging to her shoulder like a golden lucky charm, she kicked her legs and moved her arms. She was doing it—she was swimming! The water cradled her like an old friend.

"You did it!" cheered the sphinx, though it still refused to get wet.

Lily laughed, splashing water everywhere. "We did it together!"

"No," the sphinx said wisely. "You found the courage inside yourself. Sometimes we just need a friend to help us see it."

That evening, as the sphinx dissolved into golden sparkles and disappeared, Lily realized something wonderful: the hardest things often become the most magical adventures, especially when you're brave enough to try.

The next day, when Lily swam laps with her friends, nobody noticed the small golden shimmer that followed her through the water like a tiny, protective star.
