The Sphinx Who Couldn't Swim

Lily found the sphinx behind the old boardwalk arcade, curled up like a giant golden kitten. Its enormous paws covered its eyes, and its wings—yes, wings!—tucked tight against its lion body.

"Are you okay?" Lily asked, dropping her beach bag.

The sphinx peeked through golden fur. "I'm stuck," it rumbled, voice like stones tumbling underwater. "I've waited three hundred years for someone brave enough to help me."

Lily's heart raced. "What do you need?"

"The Crystal Sea lies beyond that cliff." The sphinx pointed a massive claw toward the crashing waves. "But sphinxes sink like stones. We can't go swimming." Its ancient eyes filled with tears. "I've never seen the ocean up close."

Lily bit her lip. She'd brought her baseball gear to practice with her dad, but he'd gotten stuck at work. An idea sparked like sunshine.

"Wait here!"

She sprinted back to the arcade, where an old telephone cable hung from a pole. With all her strength, she pulled until it came loose. Then she grabbed her baseball from her bag and some twine from the lost-and-found box.

Working furiously, Lily tied the baseball to the end of the cable and secured the other end around the sphinx's middle. "Okay," she panted. "Here's the plan. You swing out over the water, and I'll hold the cable like a bungee cord. If you start sinking, I'll pull you back!"

The sphinx's eyes widened. "You'd do that for me?"

"Friends help friends!" Lily grinned.

The sphinx climbed onto the boardwalk railing. With a mighty leap, it sailed out over the waves—sunlight flashing off its golden fur like a thousand coins. For a moment, it hung suspended between sky and sea, wings spread wide, laughing with pure joy.

Then the cable snapped tight. Lily planted her feet and held on with all her might as the sphinx bobbed above the water, splashing wonderstruck at the fish darting below.

"It's beautiful!" the sphinx called. "Thank you, Lily!"

When the sphinx climbed back to solid ground, it pressed something into Lily's palm—a tiny golden crystal that pulsed with ocean light.

"For your courage," the sphinx whispered. "And your kindness. I'll never forget it."

That night, Lily fell asleep to the sound of waves and the memory of golden wings against a sunset sky, knowing magic was real—and sometimes, all it took was a little creativity and a lot of heart to help a friend soar.
