The Sphinx Who Couldn't Stop Smiling
Lily had always thought her garden was ordinary, until the day she met the Sphinx behind the rosebushes.
The Sphinx was small—no bigger than a fox—with sandy golden fur and twinkling amber eyes. Unlike the grumpy sphinxes in storybooks, this one couldn't stop smiling.
"Hello there!" the Sphinx chirped. "I'm Cleo. Would you like to play padel?"
Lily had never played padel before, but Cleo made it easy. The Sphinx produced two magical rackets from thin air. They were made of moonlight and wrapped in starlight, shimmering softly in the afternoon sun.
But that wasn't the most surprising part. The court was her garden pond, and the ball was her pet goldfish, Gilbert!
"Ready?" Cleo winked. Gilbert the goldfish, now glowing with rainbow light, splashed into the air.
Gilbert zoomed back and forth like a shooting star. Whenever Lily hit him with her racket, he giggled and changed color—blue, pink, green, purple. Cleo was amazing at the game, diving and leaping to return Gilbert's magical bounces.
"You're wonderful at this!" Cleo cheered. "Most children are too afraid to try something new."
Lily smiled. Playing padel with a Sphinx and a magical goldfish was the most fun she'd ever had. When Gilbert finally splashed back into his pond, exhausted but happy, the sun was beginning to set.
"Thank you for playing with me," Cleo said gently. "Remember, Lily—the best adventures come from saying 'yes' to new things, even when they seem strange."
The Sphinx touched Lily's forehead with her paw, leaving a warm, golden glow. Then Cleo dissolved into sparkling dust, drifting toward the stars.
Lily ran to the pond. Gilbert was there, swimming in happy circles. His scales shimmered with all the colors of their game together.
That night, Lily fell asleep with a smile. She couldn't wait to see what other magic was hiding in her garden, just waiting for someone brave enough to find it.
Sometimes the most wonderful friends are the ones you least expect to meet—especially when you're willing to try something completely new.
