The Sphinx Who Couldn't Smile
Lily's dog Barnaby loved swimming more than anything in the world. Every Saturday, they would visit the old pond behind Grandmother's house. Barnaby would splash and paddle until his golden fur was soaked through.
One cloudy afternoon, as Barnaby chased a frog into the reeds, Lily heard something strange. A deep, rumbling voice echoed across the water.
"Who disturbs my rest?"
Lily stepped forward, trembling. From the mossy bank emerged a creature she had only seen in books—a sphinx! But this sphinx looked sad. His great stone wings drooped, and his eyes were dull.
"I'm Lily," she whispered. "This is Barnaby."
The sphinx sighed. "I am Orion. For three hundred years, I have guarded this pond. But I have forgotten how to smile. The ancient magic that keeps me alive requires joy. Soon, I will turn to stone forever."
Barnaby, sensing the sphinx's sadness, did something silly. He shook his wet fur, spraying water everywhere. Then he rolled in the grass, legs kicking the air, making a funny noise like a honking goose.
Lily giggled. She couldn't help it. Then she had an idea. She pulled something from her pocket—her grandfather's old top hat, left behind on his last visit.
"Put this on!" Lily said, placing the hat on Orion's great head. It looked ridiculous. A tiny hat on such a magnificent creature!
Orion looked at his reflection. For the first time in centuries, the corners of his mouth twitched. Then he laughed—a warm, wonderful sound like distant thunder.
"I had forgotten," Orion said, "that laughter is the oldest magic of all."
The clouds parted. Sunlight danced on the water. Orion's stone wings began to shimmer, turning from gray to golden.
"Thank you, Lily and Barnaby," Orion said. "You taught me that joy doesn't disappear—it just waits for someone to share it."
Every Saturday after that, Lily and Barnaby visited their friend. Sometimes they went swimming together in the magical pond. And always, Orion wore his silly hat, a reminder that the bravest thing anyone can do is make someone smile.
