The Sphinx Who Couldn't Riddle
In a land where clouds were made of cotton candy and rivers flowed with lemonade, there lived a very unhappy sphinx named Cleo. Cleo had the body of a golden lion and the head of a wise human, but she had one big problem—she was terrible at riddles.
Every sphinx is supposed to ask tricky riddles to travelers who pass by. But Cleo always forgot her riddles at the most important moments. When a brave knight approached, she'd panic and blurt out things like "What has fur and barks?" (Too easy! It was her own tail wagging!)
One stormy evening, while Cleo was practicing riddles under a twisty olive tree, lightning flashed across the purple sky. A small, wet dog came running through the rain. He was a scruffy little thing with one ear that stood up and one that flopped down.
"Hello there!" Cleo called out kindly. "I'm Cleo the Sphinx. What brings you out in this weather?"
The dog shook himself dry, sending water droplets flying like tiny diamonds. "I'm Barnaby! I'm looking for the Lost Library of Legends. Have you seen it?"
Cleo's eyes sparkled. "The Lost Library? It's just over the hill! But you'll never get in without answering the sphinx's riddle."
Barnaby's tail drooped. "I'm not very good at riddles. I'm just a regular dog."
"Neither am I!" Cleo admitted with a giggle. "That's why I'm out here instead of guarding the entrance like a proper sphinx."
Suddenly, an idea struck Cleo like another bolt of lightning. "What if we work together? You can be my assistant! We'll figure out this riddle thing as a team!"
Barnaby's tail started wagging so hard his whole body wiggled. "Really? You'd want a regular dog like me to help?"
"Not just any dog," said Cleo warmly. "My new best friend!"
Together, they came up with the most wonderful riddle anyone had ever heard: "What has four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening—but also has a tail that wags when it's happy?" The answer was "A person who loves their dog!"
The guardian sphinx was so delighted by this creative new riddle that she let them both into the Lost Library, where they spent the rest of their days reading stories and inventing new riddles together.
And Cleo finally learned the most important lesson of all: sometimes the best answers come from working with friends who see the world differently than you do.
