The Sphinx Who Couldn't Riddle

pyramidpalmsphinx

In the middle of the sunny desert stood a golden pyramid. It shimmered like honey in the light. But something strange lived there — a little sphinx named Cleo.

Cleo was not like other sphinxes. Other sphinxes loved riddles. They loved asking tricky questions to travelers. Cleo? She just wanted to play tag.

"Why must I always ask riddles?" Cleo sighed, resting her lion paws in the sand. "It's so lonely being wise."

She looked up at the tall palm tree growing near the pyramid. Its leaves waved hello in the breeze.

"Hello, Palm!" Cleo called. "Want to play?"

The palm tree didn't answer. It was, after all, a tree. But a small lizard peeked out from behind its trunk.

"I'll play!" squeaked Lila the lizard. "But I'm very fast."

Cleo's eyes sparkled. "I'm very fast too! Let's see who can run around the pyramid first!"

They raced and raced. Cleo's lion paws pattered. Lila's little legs scampered. Around and around the golden pyramid they went, laughing and chasing.

When they collapsed in the shade of the palm tree, Cleo had an idea.

"What if my riddle wasn't a question at all?" she said. "What if my riddle was... FUN?"

So when the next traveler came by, Cleo didn't ask, "What walks on four legs in the morning..." Instead, she called out, "Tag! You're it!"

The traveler, a tired man named Omar, blinked. Then he smiled. Then he ran!

Soon the desert was full of laughter. Travelers didn't fear the sphinx anymore. They came to play. They came to dance around the golden pyramid. They came to rest under the palm tree and share stories.

Cleo learned something important that day. Being wise didn't mean being serious. Being clever didn't mean being alone. The best riddle of all was how to make friends.

And that, dear reader, was a riddle she solved perfectly.
