The Sphinx Who Couldn't Fly
Lily was running through the Whispering Woods, her golden curls bouncing like sunshine. She loved these afternoon adventures, especially when she spotted something extraordinary. And today was extraordinary indeed.
Behind an ancient oak tree sat a sphinx. But not a scary, mysterious sphinx like in storybooks. This one was tiny, no bigger than a teddy bear, with soft sandy fur and the sweetest face Lily had ever seen. The little sphinx looked sad.
"What's wrong?" Lily asked, kneeling beside it.
"I'm lost," the sphinx squeaked. "I was running home before sunset, but I forgot the way. My friend Bear always helps me, but he's hibernating early this year."
Lily's eyes widened. "You're friends with a bear?"
"The best friend!" The sphinx puffed up with pride. "Bruno is gentle and kind. He lets me ride on his shoulders when I'm tired."
Lily smiled. "I can help you find your way home. But first, I'm Lily. What's your name?"
"Sunny!" The sphinx's tiny wings fluttered, but only lifted him an inch off the ground.
Lily noticed something. "Your wings seem different than other sphinx wings."
Sunny hung his head. "That's why I can't fly home before dark. All the other sphinxes fly high and fast. I'm too small."
"But maybe you're not supposed to fly like them," Lily said thoughtfully. "Maybe your special kind of flying hasn't been discovered yet."
Together, they set off, Sunny hopping along beside Lily. Suddenly, a massive shadow appeared above them. Lily gasped—but it wasn't scary. It was a huge bear with sparkling wings! Bruno had woken up early!
"Sunny!" Bruno boomed gently. "I was worried when I couldn't find you. Who's your new friend?"
"This is Lily! She's helping me find my way home."
Bruno smiled at Lily. "Thank you for helping my little friend. Come, I'll carry you both home on my back."
Soaring through the sky on Bruno's back, Sunny discovered something amazing. His tiny wings could spin like helicopter blades when he was brave enough to try! He could zoom and dance in ways no other sphinx could.
That night, Lily realized something wonderful: being different isn't bad at all. Sometimes, your biggest weakness can become your greatest strength, especially when you have friends who believe in you.
